December 18 Be Happy As You Want To BeAlmost everyone have heard the hit single 'Don't Worry, Be Happy' by Bobby McFerrin. The song has a very catchy way of conveying its message of being happy to everyone. Bobby Mcferin's simple message surely made a lot of people happy by telling them not to worry. Living a happy, resilient and optimistic life is wonderful, and is also good for your health. Being happy actually protects you from the stresses of life. Stress is linked to top causes of death such as heart disease, cancer and stroke. One of the better things ever said is - 'The only thing in life that will always remain the same is change', and in our life we have the power to make the necessary changes if we want to. Even if we find ourselves in an unbearable situation we can always find solace in the knowledge that this too will pass. Social networks or relationships are essential to happiness. People are different. Accept people for who or what they are; avoid clashes, constant arguments, and let go of all kinds of resentments. If arguments seem unavoidable still try and make an effort to understand the situation and you might just get along with them well. Happiness is actually found in everyone, increasing it is a way to make a life more wonderful and also more healthy. To be happy is relatively easy, just decide to be a happy person. Abraham Lincoln observed that most people for most of the time can choose how happy or stressed, how relaxed or troubled, how bright or dull their outlook is to be. The choice is simple really, choose to be happy. There are several ways by which you can do this. News is stressful. Get less of it. Some people just can't start their day without their daily dose of news. Try and think about it, 99% of the news we hear or read is bad news. Starting or ending the day with bad news does not seem to be a sensible thing to do. A spiritual connection is also recommended. Being part of a religious group with its singing, sacraments, chanting, prayers and meditations foster inner peace. Manage your time. Time is invaluable and too important to waste. Time management can be viewed as a list of rules that involves scheduling, setting goals, planning, creating lists of things to do and prioritizing. These are the core basics of time management that should be understood to develop an efficient personal time management skill. These basic skills can be fine tuned further to include the finer points of each skill that can give you that extra reserve to make the results you desire. Laugh and laugh heartily everyday. Heard a good joke lately? Tell your friends or family about it. As they say -'Laughter is the best medicine'. Run, jog, walk and do other things that your body was made for. Feel alive! These are the few simple things you can do everyday to be happy. And always remember the quote from Abraham Lincoln, "Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be." December 13 Did you know? The products you use each and every day could be making you sick, or at the very least I can guarantee they are not contributing to your well-being like you may think. Common cleaning products are a toxic combination of formaldehyde, chlorine bleach and petroleum solvents just to name a few. We use these products to clean surfaces that we eat off of or bath in. Having these products in our natural environment has caused tremendous damage as we all know, but is anyone aware of the damage we are doing to our own health? The products that our mothers and grandmothers used 25 years ago are no longer the same as the cleaning products that we are buying today. Some of the brand names have stayed the same, but the chemicals and toxins in these products are very different. Cleaning products are not the only problem. We need to know what we are spraying in the air, what we are putting on our bodies and what we are eating. An October report by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found lead in 61% of the 33 top-brand lipsticks tested (popular mainstream brands). Lead is linked to learning and behavioral problems, but alarmingly, the FDA doesn't regulate it in cosmetics. We, as consumers, much seek out the lead free products on our own, which is next to impossible because they are not required to label many of the ingredients in their formulation. I found a way to protect myself… will you? As we use multiple cleaners to clean our homes, we may inadvertently mix bleach with other cleaners that contain ammonia. This combination produces a toxic called chloramine gas for example: mildew remover (commonly contains bleach) & window cleaner (commonly contain ammonia). These toxic gases "can cause coughing, loss of voice, a feeling of burning and suffocation, and even death." If this was not scary enough there have been direct links formed between ADHD, asthma and many other conditions with our common brand name cleaning products. It is alarming that the products that we are using to supposedly rid our home of harmful dirt, germs and dust are causing us harm. This was not something I was willing to keep doing after I was enlightened… Are you? < Click here for more information> What if you could save time, money and bring safer products into your home, would you? If there was more economical alternatives that actually worked and that would not harm you or your family, would you use them? What if you could use products that were environmental conscious, would you? There are better options, which are less expensive, more effective and easily accessible. December 04 Stress myths and misconceptionsPeople may, and frequently do, cause significant damage to themselves by basing their lives on inaccuracies and misconceptions. Some of the most commonly quoted in relation to stress include the following.
‘There’s no such thing as stress’ There is, but the word ‘stress’ itself is often applied incorrectly. Many people will use it when they have a temporary work overload, whereas in fact stress only occurs when a person perceives (over a prolonged period) that they have insufficient personal resources to cope with a given situation.
We can think of stress as a light switch that our body turns on automatically under specific circumstances. What we need to do is learn how to turn the switch off. This is an ability that needs to be taught - as only through teaching can we learn how to manage our body’s natural response to perceived danger.
‘Stress is good for you’ Wrong. It’s often mistakenly thought that stress is good for people, when long-term stress is invariably harmful. Ill-health due to work-related stress, or conditions ascribed to it, is also one of the most common types of work-related ill-health reported.
While a certain amount of pressure can motivate individuals and therefore be useful, stress is never so. A probable explanation for the myth that people perform well under stress is that in fact they perform well under pressure that is ‘controlled’ (i.e. effectively managed).
Controlled pressure is useful when our body and mind are finely tuned in a way that enables them to achieve optimum results and performance. A feeling of nervousness before giving a presentation, for example, will often result in increased mental acuity and responsiveness, which will stimulate the audience. By comparison, arriving late, inadequately prepared or with a laptop or projector that fails to operate properly would inevitably be stressful.
‘Stress is a mental illness’ Wrong. Stress is the natural reaction people have to excessive pressure or other types of demand placed on them. Stress itself is not an illness, but it can lead to mental and physical ill-health such as depression, back pain and heart disease. ‘Stressors affect everybody equally’ Wrong. An employer or manager should appreciate that not all members of their team will react in the same way to any given problem, and that which one person perceives as merely pressure, another may perceive as stress.
Managers and supervisors need to be aware of the symptoms of stress and have the skills and expertise to defuse or mitigate any issues before they become potentially serious or disruptive. Being able to talk over difficult situations can often help those employees who are under excessive pressure, and managers should ideally provide the first line of support in encouraging staff to take steps to combat the problem. This could be through in-house referral, e.g. to Human Resources or Occupational Health; or to an external counselling service, e.g. an employee assistance programme or other outside agency.
‘Suffering from stress is a sign of weakness’ Wrong. Anyone can suffer from stress. It all depends on the circumstances we are in at the time.
Many people think that if they admit to experiencing stress, it’s a sign of failure, weakness or ineptitude. An individual working in an organisation where there are imminent redundancies, for example, may well seek to cover up any sign of stress in the belief that they may be viewed as unable to cope with their job and might therefore be regarded as expendable.
Many employees are also wary of any mention of stress being noted on their work record in case it might prejudice their chances of promotion, and so avoid discussing the problem with colleagues. This is why it’s so important that the workplace culture embraces the notion that to be stressed occasionally is a normal human condition, and that to admit to it - initially to yourself - is the first step in modifying the situation or meeting the challenge.
‘There’s nothing an employer can do if an employee denies suffering from work-related stress’ Wrong. Employers are under a duty to protect their employees' health and safety, regardless of whether an employee is willing to run the risk of harm. If an employer believes that an employee is at risk of stress, concerns should therefore be raised in a way that makes it easy for the employee to be honest - for example through an informal discussion with an independent third party, or away from a particularly tough manager. If the employee continues to deny that they are stressed, the employer should make a note of all conversations on the subject (including dates) and ensure the situation is monitored.
Not necessarily. An employer's duty of care does not extend to preventing ill health caused by problems in employees' personal lives, such as divorce, bereavement or money worries. Legally, because the source of any stress-related condition resulting from these is not the employer’s responsibility, an employee would not normally be able to bring a personal injury claim.
However, it is possible that a failure by the employer to take such matters into account in dealing with poor performance and/or increased absence might render any subsequent dismissal (resulting from the employee’s stress) ‘unfair’. This might also amount to a breach of the implied duty of trust and confidence and, if the breach was sufficiently serious, the employee might resign and claim unfair constructive dismissal. If an employee is known to be having problems outside work, this must be taken into account when carrying out any stress-related risk assessments, as this could make them more vulnerable to potential stressors inside work.
Wrong. Counselling may help individuals who are suffering from work-related stress, but is unlikely to tackle the source of the problem. Research has found that support at work, particularly from managers for their staff, has a protective effect – frontline prevention by the organisation is far better than third party cure. Stress?!In order to eliminate or at least control stress, it is vital to know and understand the causes of stress. Of course, there are many causes of stress and they are as varied as the people who suffer from stress, but there are a few places to look first. And by learning about these causes of stress, you can figure out where stress is entering your life. One of the most common, and most complained about, causes of stress is work. However, it is not only the day-to-day tasks and routine pressures of work that can lead to stress. In fact, the mere concern about keeping a job can be a source of stress. Unfortunately, the combined stress of both work itself and the possibility of losing it creates a sort of double-stress in which people feel they have to work even harder in order to keep their jobs, making the stress that much worse. As well, for those who have not entered the working world yet, school can be a great source of stress. The constant pressure of schoolwork, friends, teachers, tests, quizzes, papers, and everything else can be enough to make anyone feel like they are in trapped in a vice. In addition, the deadlines are all immoveable, so students are constantly under time pressure. And, to make matters worse, there are often several deadlines overlapping each other, intensifying the demands on time. Then, once final exams arrive, there is a lot to re-learn and students need to spend so much time studying that they can barely sleep. Needless to say, losing sleep does not help people who are under stress. Thus, students need to manage stress just as much as people who work. Another cause of stress is simple family life. Unfortunately, though we hope that our home lives can be sources of relief from daily stress, they can often be sources of stress all their own. For childen as well as parents and spouses, the home can often be its own source of pressure. For parents, stress can often come from simply worrying about their children. After all, seeing a child grow up, make mistakes, go through school, go to college, play sports, and often learn things to hard way is enough to make a parent tear their hair out. Thus, despite the joy that children can bring, they can also be causes of stress and worry. Unfortunately, parents can be causes of stress also. Though they often have their childrens' best interests in mind, they can also put a lot of pressure onto their children, causing them to worry not only about school or life, but also how their parents will react when they hear about some new event, success, or error. It is as though there is no place to turn when things go wrong, creating extra stress. No, it is not easy being a parent, but it isn't always easy being a child or a teenager either, since parents can often be causes of stress as much as sources of comfort from it. On top of that, spouses can also be causes on stress. Let's face it, husbands and wives often have expectations of their significant others and it is not always easy to live up to those expectations. As well, spouses often spend a lot of time avoiding certain arguments simply because they are trying to avoid stress. However, leaving tension in the air while not resolving it can be a cause of stress. Money is also a major cause of stress, simply for the fact that there never seems to be enough of it. Thus, as the money keeps going out but it never seems to come in enough, stress just keeps mounting. Unfortunately, spouses, children and sometimes parents can often remind us of our shortfalls and they will often increase the stress. Of course, that is to say nothing of the continual reminders from the mortgage or rent, car payments, credit cards and other bills. And, furthermore, it is rather difficult to be philosophical about money stress since attempting to put things into perspective only recalls thoughts about the money that always seems to be missing. Thus, money stress just keeps piling up higher and higher and there never seems to be a way out. Though this is only a partial list of all the possible causes of stress, these are some of the most common sources. However, no matter where the problem is arising, stress will not make them better. Rather, stress will only make it harder for people to think about their problems and try to solve them. Thus, in order to solve the problems that lead to stress, the best place to start is by managing the stress, then working to solve the problems with a clear and uncluttered mind. November 30 Nutrition as ADHD Alternative TreatmentThe quality of food we eat (or lack thereof) has a profound affect on Attention Deficit Disorder and ADHD. For many people, nutrition alone can effectively work as an ADHD alternative treatment. I have helped many people whose children who have been Dx with ADD or ADHD to change the course of their lives with a nutritional approuch. A growing body of research points to nutritional deficiencies - especially with essential fatty acids and amino acids - as a contributing factor of Attention Deficit Disorder and learning deficiencies. Put down the Ritalin bottle for one minute to consider these Attention Deficit Disorder ADHD nutrition research findings; A George Washington University School of Medicine study found that hyperactive children who ate a meal high in protein did equally well, and sometimes better, in school than non-hyperactive kids. An Oxford University (England) study evaluated the effects of fatty acid supplementation in average intelligence children with significant reading and writing disabilities. The ADHD symptoms in children receiving Essential Fatty Acids significantly improved over the children in the control group receiving a placebo. Researchers first tied Attention Deficit Disorder ADHD with lower essential fatty acid in 1981. Studies examining essential fatty acid blood levels in children with behavioral problems in 1983 confirmed this Attention Deficit Disorder nutrition connection. Researchers further documented the essential fatty acid deficiency tie to Attention Deficit Disorder in a 1987 study. Then, a 1995 study comparing essential fatty acid levels in ADHD boys against a control group of boys without ADHD found significantly lower levels of Omega-3 fatty acids. In 1996 Purdue University researchers have found that boys with low blood levels of Omega-3 fatty acids have a greater frequency of Attention Deficit Disorder ADHD. Attention Deficit Disorder is the most common behavioral disorder in children. Not all Attention Deficit Disorder ADHD children are nutritionally deficient in essential fatty acids, However, statistics and studies show that a significant number of ADHD children are. Physicians predominately use stimulant drugs such as Ritalinor Dexidrine for Attention Deficit Disorder but studies show that Attention Deficit Disorder ADHD children whose treatment program includes only stimulant medication remain at a high risk for vandalism, petty crime, frequency of alcoholic intoxication, and possession of marijuana. Additionally, ADHD medications do not always work, have a host of harmful side effects and never treat the cause the Attention Deficit Disorder. With Attention Deficit Disorder, ADHD, nutrition and food is one the first aspect of treatment to consider, as an ADHD alternative treatment or used in conjunction with traditional ADHD stimulant drug treatment. Nurtitional help for Attention Deficit Disorders goes beyond the removal of red food coloring. Fatty acids are used to make brain and nerve tissue in the body and are crucial for proper growth, mental function, the immune system and brain development. The body cannot produce the two fatty acids families, Omega-3 and Omega-6, on its own and therefore must receive these key Attention Deficit Disorder ADHD nutrition ingredients through diet and supplementation. Although the typical Western diet is high in the Omega-6 family of fatty acids (found in corn, sunflower, canola and safflower oil, margarine, vegetable oil and shortening), most Americans young and old are highly deficient in Omega-3. Learning specialists now believe many childhood behavior and learning problems are associated with Omega-3 deficiencies. This deficiency has a greater impact on males because their requirements for essential fatty acids are, in general, much higher. It is no surprise that boys are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder at a much higher rate than girls. ADHD adults and parents of ADHD children should include food high in Omega-3 fatty acids daily. That said, many children simply will not eat the Omega-3 rich salmon, mackerel and sardines. Enter flax seed and flax oil - *food of the gods* when it comes to Omega-3 fatty acids. Flax seed and flax oil are the richest plant source of Omega-3 fatty acids and offers Attention Deficit Disorder a natural source of these amazing fatty acids. If fussing with seeds and oils are not your thing, there are nutritional suppliments which contain all the benifits without having to measure. I have made it a mission in my life to help people experience relief from conditions. Relief from ADHD symptoms is possible, as well as many other conditions simply by taking high quality nutritional suppliments. I have been blessed to have found a line of products that are proven to be effective in so many conditions. I have seen the difference good quality suppliments can make, to watch someone blossom because they are experiencing relief from the negative symptoms of a condition is amazing. |
